The real issue for teens and wearing contacts is not their age, but whether they are responsible enough to wear and care for contact lenses properly. Parents, teens, and their eye doctor must make this decision together.

Even though there are a lot of trendy glasses available now for teens, contact lenses may help teens have more self-esteem.
Teens are self-conscious, and with contacts they could feel more attractive and accepted instead of wearing glasses. They’re also an advantage for active teens who play sports.

The responsibility of cleaning contact lenses is easier than ever, just one bottle of multi-purpose solution and a case. Of course, one type of contact lens — daily disposable — doesn’t need a cleaning regimen because the lenses are thrown in the trash at the end of each day. For this reason, daily disposable contacts are a great vision correction option for most teenagers.

For contacts that do require care, many eye care practitioners report that teens and children are more diligent about cleaning their contact lenses than are adults, who after years of wearing them, often become more casual about lens care. Young people are more careful about following directions given them by a medical professional.

With contact lenses you also always have a “back up pair”, glasses are easily broken and expensive to replace. It’s impossible to generalize about cost. As with eyeglasses, the cost of contact lenses varies widely, depending on the brand, the prescription, and how often the lenses are replaced. Daily disposable contacts are a special case, because they don’t require any cleaning supplies or containers. It depends on the brand and the supplier, but daily disposables usually cost about $1 per day, making them affordable for most people and great contacts for children.

Take you teen to your eye doctor and see if contacts are right for them.

Fall has arrived and I bet your allergies are starting to act up and your eyes are suffering along with your contact lenses. A lot of contact lens wearers go through this discomfort every fall season. Allergies are mostly related to the air quality and allergens that can become adhered to contact lenses. It cases symptoms like itchy and watery eyes. AC Lens has some help tips to get you through the season and its allergy discomforts.

1. Wear eyeglasses more than your contacts. A lot of people hate their glasses but switching to glasses for Fall can help you avoid an allergy attack. Allergens such as pollen and dust often adhere to the thin surfaces of contacts.

2. Clean your contacts in solutions often. Cleaning will keep your contacts free of allergens. If you wear disposable lenses, consider replacing them more often.

3. Keep your eyes moist. Keep irritated eyes moist with artificial tears. The artificial tears will also wash the irritants out of your eyes. Find articial tears and other eye allergy drops at AC Lens.

4. Use cool compresses on your eyes. When your eyes are red and swollen, resist the urge to rub them. Rubbing will make the inflammation worse by spreading around the allergens. A cool, damp compress will help relieve discomfort.

5. See your eye doctor. Your eye doctor can recommend medical products for your particular symptoms. Some products may even help prevent allergy attacks. You should also see your eye doctor to rule out possible poblems that may not be allergy-related.

Want to add some sparkle to your eyes? Even if it costs $15,000? The latest trend in beauty right now is custom-made, gold-plated contact lenses with diamonds, a new “jewelry” line developed by Shekhar Eye Research.

Creator Chandrashekhar Chawan found his inspiration for his sparkly contact lenses from none other than dentistry. Chawan’s wife who had diamonds planted on her teeth at her last dentist visit, realized that people loved jewels anywhere and everywhere.

The lenses are created using Chandra Boston Scleral lenses, generally used to treat eye illnesses, to hold the jewelry to part of the lenses so it does not touch the cornea. Chawan claims the method is “very safe,” but experts are warning that the use of medical lenses for vanity is a cause for concern.

Apparently Boston Scleral lenses are only prescribed for people with severe eye disease who have no other option. The lens itself is described cumbersome and bulky, and has to be filled with saline solution. People with a severe eye disorder or condition are forced to tolerate these lenses.

But Chawan sees no harm, while acknowledging that the sparkly lenses are a luxury – not a necessity – for those who want to “show off” and attract attention.

How soon will you be sporting the new trend? Do you think it’s something that will catch on or are these lenses just not safe?

Long, long ago hard lenses were the only contact lenses available. Once soft lenses became available, it was like a dream come true. They required less care and could be thrown away after a certain time period of wear. Now there are so many types of contact lenses, and you have the ability to choose by preferences and doctor recommendations. So many people, with all different types on prescriptions, are able to wear contact lenses with ease.

But how do you know which one is right for you? Below are the different types of contact lenses that are available, read up and ask your doctor about those types that catch your interest:

1. PMMA lenses, which are also called rigid or “hard” contact lenses were the first type ever made; developed in the 1960s. They are made from a plastic called polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). These contacts are very durable, but their disadvantage lies in fact that they do not allow oxygen to reach the cornea directly. Oxygen gets to the cornea when you blink and the lens moves, which allows the oxygen dissolved in the tears to reach the cornea. Rigid lenses are also the least comfortable type of contacts. While they are low cost they are hardly used anymore. However, there are some patients who prefer them because of their durability.

2. Soft contact lenses are the most common of all lens types. They are made of plastic and other materials such as silicone, and also incorporate water. The water makes them soft and flexible, as well as allowing oxygen to reach the cornea. Soft contact lenses are used by the majority of the contact lens wearers in the United States. There are also different types of soft contacts such as:

Daily disposable lenses that must be thrown away at the end of each day. These are more expensive, but carry a lower risk of infection.

Toric lenses for astigmatism. These contacts are for those who do not have any other eye issue other than astigmatism. They are available in both rigid and soft materials.

Extended wear contact lenses. These are made of materials designed to last 2-4 weeks. The risk of infection is higher and they do tend to be somewhat expensive.

3. Gas-permeable lenses are the newer version of the hard contact lenses that are made of silicone and other materials that allows the oxygen to directly reach the cornea. This reason alone is why they are called gas permeable.

There are so many advantages to using contact lenses. Contacts can open up a whole new world for those who choose to wear them. Are contact lenses right for you?
