Glasses Without Lenses – Stupid Trend, or Fashion Forward?

by admin on July 9, 2012

Many spectators and journalists have recently noticed NBA players such as Lebron James and Dwyane Wade wearing trendy reading glasses to their press conferences and interviews. While wearing reading glasses during a press interview happens all the time, the reading glasses being sported by celebs and athletes days are a little bit different than most. The eyeglasses seen by many NBA stars and pop icons these days don’t have lenses in them, which has sparked quite a bit of debate and interest over why they would wear them.

While no-lens eyeglasses are being worn by celebrities and athletes around the world, this is a growing trend, with more and more people worldwide adopting eyeglasses exclusively for fashion purposes. See the video below for an example of Lebron James sporting no-lens glasses at the NBA all-star game.

Glasses Without Lenses: A Trend Worthwhile?

If you’re like most, wearing glasses without lenses seems ridiculous upon first impression. That being said, it’s not a huge surprise that no-lens eyeglasses have become so popular, especially when you consider the fact that standard eyeglasses have become a trendy part of modern fashion. Rachel Johnson, the stylist behind NBA stars Lebron James and Dwyane Wade, mentioned that no-lens eyeglasses aren’t always appropriate, but can be worn to give off a more serious appearance, and are ideal for business oriented discussions.

This isn’t a huge surprise, as statistics have shown that most people view those who wear eyeglasses as being more intelligent than those without eyeglasses upon first impression. While past trends associated intelligence and eyeglasses with being a “geek”, being slightly nerdy or geeky doesn’t carry the same connotation it did twenty years back.

In fact, “geek chic” eyeglasses are among the most popular styles of reading glasses worn these days, and are inspired from “nerdy” glasses in the 80’s and 90’s. Many social groups such as Hipsters choose to wear glasses over contact lenses for no reason other than fashion purposes.

Then again, they serve no real purpose…

Generally speaking, most people who disapprove of this trend think it’s frivolous, and silly to wear glasses that don’t even serve a purpose. To them, it would be similar to wearing a watch that didn’t tell time, or a belt that couldn’t hold up your pants. While this is entirely understandable, in the world of celebrity fashion, functionality and comfort isn’t of huge concern.  Like most trends, it’s best to simply say it’s “not for everyone,” but for those who do enjoy their glasses, this certainly should come as good news.

For those who want to purchase standard, or no-lens reading glasses, AC Lens features a wide array of trendy reading glasses ideal for any look you could imagine. While we do not encourage customers to alter their products, most eyeglasses feature easy to remove lenses, which allows those who don’t need vision correction to wear eyeglasses frames for fashion purposes.

What’s funny about this is that when I was young no one wanted to wear glasses and now of course everyone does, I guess as they say if you wait long enough everything comes into fashion.' Alicia July 31, 2012 at 2:42 am

it’s rather amusing that after decades of wearing glasses, i was finally able to get lasik and don’t need them anymore, and now it’s fashionable to wear glasses again. i just don’t understand why they are wearing the glasses without the fakes lenses like the trend was in the 90’s. It just looks silly with no lenses.' Jimmy January 17, 2014 at 10:07 pm

This idea is a complete oxymoron. Making absolutely no sense. People who wear them look like they are wearing 3d glasses walking around looking crazy. The purpose of this item is in absolute opposition of the purpose for glasses. Seriously this was just to make money and now people made it fashionable . Some idiot is very rich now .' There is a difference between wearing glasses with a clear lens, which might give the impression of intelligence, and wearing glasses with no lens which is plain stupid. It’s not like wearing a watch that doesn’t tell time, it’s like wearing a watch that has nothing to look at.
