Growth of Daily Disposable Contact Lens Wear Continues
Contact lens industry sources, as well manufacturers report continued strong growth in the daily disposable category of the contact lens market. This growth has been spurred on by widespread news coverage of the eye infections reported last year as being due to Renu and other contact lens cleaning solutions. By avoiding the use of solutions altogether, daily disposable eliminate the possibility for solution related infection. Growth has also been spurred by new lenses, and new versions of existing lenses, from each of the major US manufacturers. Coopervision is reportedly very pleased with the growth of their Proclear 1-day. Ciba and J&J both launched new daily disposables to add to their catalogs, and Bausch and Lomb redesigned and relaunched their Soflens 1-day (now called Soflens Daily Disposables). With daily disposable use in some European countries approaching 50%, there remains considerable room for further market share gains in the US.
